Why was a pedestrian bridge from the Western Hills over State Highway 2 to the relocated Melling Station ruled out?

A feasibility study was prepared in 2019 for a potential pedestrian overbridge over State Highway 2, connecting the relocated Melling Station to the Western Hills suburbs of Harbour View and Tirohanga. Due to the low number of pedestrians and cyclists, the high cost, safety requirements and access challenges such as the inclusion of stairs (or switch back paths), the significant native bush removal and resulting environmental mitigation required, a direct link to the Western Hills is not being considered as part of the RiverLink project for now. The design does not preclude this happening in the future.
